The second annual Get to Know International Unconference will take place on October 20-23, 2011, in Jasper, Alberta. We will build upon the foundation of the first Unconference in Kelowna by continuing the development of a new kind of dialogue for connecting youth with nature – one which is inclusive, effective, enlightening, and focused. New and returning Unconference delegates will include high level leaders and innovators in three major sectors: NGOs, private sector, and government. Renowned nature artists and environmentalists Robert Bateman and Wyland will also join the dialogue, either in-person or via teleconference. We at Get to Know believe that the onus is on green leaders to set an example of how to cooperate and find innovative, pragmatic, and interdisciplinary solutions. Together, we will take the first step to prepare the next generation to take decisive action for the health of our planet by providing young North Americans with an opportunity to get to know their neighbours of other species – the animals and plants who live in their own "backyard".
The 2011 Unconference will include an entire youth forum consisting of 20 delegates, ages 13 to 19. Youth delegates will provide valuable insight and a first-hand youth perspective into the development of the collaborative "Get to Know" youth environmental education strategy. In addition, youth delegates will develop their own plan for engaging their peers with the outdoors by forming a network of Get to Know Youth Ambassadors.
Through an extensive communications campaign, dynamic facilitated dialogue sessions, inspiring interactions with Robert Bateman and Wyland, and community-focused outdoor activities, the Unconference will facilitate discussion about creating a continent-wide strategy to motivate youth to get outdoors and "get to know" nature. To ensure the success of the Unconference, we will promote out-of-the-box, cross-sector collaboration. We will also celebrate 2011, International Year of Forests, and our success along the path to a sustainable future.
We invite you to view a few video highlights from last year's Unconference on our YouTube channel, and some photos of Jasper, Palisades Stewardship Education Centre, and The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. A complete summary of the 2010 Unconference is available in the 2010 final report.
